About the American Cancer Society
We are the nation’s largest voluntary health organization. Our volunteer network—2 million strong—empowers people to make a difference in the fight against cancer.
Research
The American Cancer Society has funded 44 Nobel Prize winners and more cancer research than any other non-governmental agency in the world. The Florida Division awarded 13 Million in research for state funded cancer related research projects. Of the 13 million, 8 million was awarded to the Tampa Bay Area.
Patient & Family Services
We help people with cancer. Our Hope Lodge provides a free place to stay during outpatient treatment. In addition, we offer transportation to treatment; prostate cancer support groups—Man to Man; one-on-one survivor support to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients—Reach to Recovery; and support for families coping with cancer throughout I Can Cope Program.
Call 1-800-227-2345 for services available in your area.
Youth Programs
College Scholarships are available for students with a history of cancer. And our summer camp for kids with cancer (R.O.C.K. Camp—Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) gives kids hope. Our Families R.O.C.K. Weekend offers support and information to families when their child is coping with cancer.
Education
Prevention and early detection of cancer have contributed to the growing number of survivors, and the American Cancer Society has led the way in both areas. We provide prevention education on the topics of breast, prostate, colorectal and lung cancer.
Advocacy
We work together with volunteers to advocate for meaningful laws that will help us cure cancer in our lifetime.
What’s at Stake
This year about 559,650 Americans are expected to die of cancer—more than 1,500 people a day. One out of every four deaths in the U.S. are from cancer. Among children ages 1-14, cancer causes more deaths in the U.S. than any other disease. The annual cost of cancer in the U.S. is an estimated $206.3 billion.
Progress is Being Made
Improved cancer treatments, tobacco prevention programs, health screenings and better nutrition have led to a steady decline in the death rates. Fewer people died of cancer in 2004 than in 2003, marking the second consecutive year that cancer deaths have declined in the United States. Today more than half of the diagnosed will survive. Thank you for joining the fight against cancer.
Mission Statement
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
